As many as 40 children at Uintah Elementary in Utah watched as their school lunches were taken from them and thrown away as punishment for the students owing the school money. The move outraged  parents who think the school went too far. According to a local news report:

“It was pretty traumatic and humiliating,” said Erica Lukes, whose 11-year-old daughter had her cafeteria lunch taken from her as she stood in line Tuesday at Uintah Elementary School, 1571 E. 1300 South.

Lukes said as far as she knew, she was all paid up. “I think it’s despicable,” she said. “These are young children that shouldn’t be punished or humiliated for something the parents obviously need to clear up.”

The Salt Lake Tribune contacted Jason Olsen, a Salt Lake City District spokesman, who said

“The district’s child-nutrition department became aware that Uintah had a large number of students who owed money for lunches.

As a result, the child-nutrition manager visited the school and decided to withhold lunches to deal with the issue, he said.”

What many will perceive as school policy overreach or even a cruel form of punishment by hunger, it is clear that these types of abuses need to stop.

Recently there was another story where parents were fined $10 for not including grains in their children’s lunch, which the school then supplemented with Ritz Crackers, seriously.

These types occurrences are becoming all too familiar as of late and we must make a stand for our freedom and for our children. Below I’ve attached the contact information for the Salt Lake City School District so you can voice your concerns directly to them.
