In a statement regarding the bill, Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin said,

“I am proud of Vermont for being the first state in the nation to ensure that Vermonters will know what is in their food…Vermont has led the local food movement that is better connecting people nationwide with the food they eat.”

Gov. Peter Shumlin is expected to sign the bill which will be implemented by July 1st, 2016. This legislation will help other bordering states to begin implementing their own GMO labeling bills as their authority to mandate GMO labeling relies on other states passing similar legislation.

Long time state Senator and GMO labeling advocate, David Zuckerman, said:

“Vermont has now put a stake in the sand around food transparency, and it may well help create that across the country, much as we did with marriage equality and other historic measures,”

GMO foods have been shown in recent independent studies to be dangerous to human health and need to be scrutinized for their high pesticide levels which can cause numerous health and environmental issues.

Food activists, no doubt, will be celebrating as this legislation is signed into law and the years long battle for food transparency is finally coming to the long awaited climax as at least 25 states are now fighting to GMO labeling. Many people credit the huge March Against Monsanto protests which brought millions into the streets for the rapid push for food transparency into the mainstream.
